It told the story of a boy who searches for his missing dog and winds up in a magician’s garden. Van Allsburg’s first book, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, was published in 1979. The publisher liked them and suggested that Van Allsburg write and illustrate his own books. His wife and a friend, the book illustrator David Macaulay, encouraged him to show the drawings to a publisher. His works were displayed at several galleries. Van Allsburg began his career as a sculptor. He attended the University of Michigan and then the Rhode Island School of Design for graduate school. He enjoyed drawing as a boy, but in college he studied sculpture. The books have won many awards, and three- Jumanji, The Polar Express, and Zathura-were made into movies.Ĭhris Van Allsburg was born on June 18, 1949, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
